COVID-19 Response/Respuesta

Update on the Response to the Coronavirus

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10 NIV).

In the past few days, the effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak has become more extensive and more intense. Hundreds of people throughout the State of California are being infected, and deaths are on the rise. Apparently, the coronavirus is with us for a while.

As the disease advances, guidelines are changing almost daily. We have heard the advice of health officials, mayors, the Governor and the President. We have already seen the closure of public buildings, schools and restaurants. Today the President has asked that meetings of more than 10 people be avoided. Last night, Los Angeles Mayor Gartcetti, noting the freedom to gather for worship guaranteed in the First Amendment,  asked that places of worship voluntarily close to protect their adherents. I am advising that our churches throughout the state to cancel services until Wednesday, April 1, 2020. On that date, we will reevaluate the situation, in accordance with local, state and national government guidelines.

This is a very difficult decision. Some may think that such a decision demonstrates a lack of faith. We know that God is all-powerful; that he hears our prayers, and that he is able to stay the course of COVID-19 and its effects. But as we have said from the beginning, we must also act with wisdom and caution. Christian love demands that we protect and care for those among us. We do not want to become unwitting carriers of the virus. We have many senior members in our churches, and we must concern ourselves with their health and well being. The seniors in our society are especially vulnerable to the coronavirus.  Governor Gavin has asked that all senior citizens 65 or older to stay at  home. Please take care of our wonderful, faithful senior members.

In the meantime, stay in contact with the members and friends of your local church through phone calls, texting, email and social media. You may wish to livestream your sermons. Encourage families to meet together for Bible studies, worship and prayer.

Due the present crisis, the State Office will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. I will be available for appointments at the office on other days, if necessary.

We will continue to monitor the status of COVID-19 in our cities, counties and state. Please keep me informed if any members become ill. Pray that God will stay the advance of this disease. Pray for our state and nation. Pray for each other. God bless and keep you in health.

Dear Brothers and Sisters of COGOP California,

We greet you in the name and love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We pray that this letter finds each of you well, standing firm in the faith and with the peace of Christ firmly planted in your hearts.

In the past several weeks our country and our state has experienced a series of events like never before as COVID-19 has made headline news. As a committee, we have consulted God in prayer, taken into consideration the recommendations from the CDC (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and governmental leaders. We have come to a consensus that due to the present circumstances of the COVID-19 Pandemic, it is in the best interest of our church state membership to cancel several state events to ensure everyone’s health and safety during these uncertain times. It is with a heavy heart that we must announce the cancellation of Youth Conference 2020: Ekklesia, Victory Teen Camp 2020 and Focus Up Kids Camp. Please make note and share the following information with those who have pre-registered for Youth Conference: Ekklesia:

For churches or families that have pre-registered on our church website (cacogop.org), the state will be issuing refunds within the next few weeks.

If you reserved a hotel room for youth conference, we recommend that you reach out to the corresponding hotel and cancel your reservations as soon as possible.

In closing, we would like to request that you continue to keep our state in prayer, along with our local, state and national leaders as they face challenging times. May God grant them the wisdom in the days and weeks to come to lead with compassion and integrity. Let us also pray for the church body throughout our state and those affected by the fears and circumstances of this epidemic.

We trust that God’s mercy and peace surrounds us and that God is in control. Rest assured, He is still sitting on the throne and in His omniscience knows how this will turn out. He is Pastor and we are still his flock. He will cover, protect and provide for us all.

In His grip,

Omar Gonzalez, CA State Youth Director

Nathan and Leeann Ojeda, Children’s Camp Directors

Pastor Aaron and Lissett Rodriguez, Teen Camp Directors/Camp Chair
